Next Ballard Little League football sign-ups are Aug. 1 and Aug. 3
The next regular Ballard little league football sign-up for students in grades 1-5 will be held Aug. 3 from 5:30-6 p.m. at Bomber Fieldhouse. A one-hour practice will follow. Players also may sign up at a pancake breakfast on Aug. 1 at Smokey D's in LaCenter from 7-10 a.m. 
Bomber Bash set for Aug. 8; first day of school for students is Aug. 13
The eighth annual “Bomber Back-to-School Bash” will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. All students in the district will register for class, receive orientation information at all of Ballard’s schools. (A complete schedule of class orientations follows this story.) 
May Students of the Month announced
Ballard County Elementary School has announced its Students of the Month for May. Students are selected by their teachers as good examples of the positive attitude, behavior and effort that is expected of everyone at BCES.  
Higgins chosen as BCES guidance counselor
Fifth-grade math teacher Ginger Higgins was named guidance counselor last week by the Site-Based Decision-Making council at Ballard County Elementary School. As of July 1, she will replace Vicki Fowler, who is retiring after 31 years of service.

BCES art students paint for governor’s Derby celebration
Several fourth- and fifth-grade students in Jennifer Shrum’s art classes at Ballard County Elementary School have been working on a contribution to the governor’s Kentucky Derby celebration by painting this canvas, and hoping it will be used as a table covering at the Old State Capitol in Frankfort.  
Fourth-graders visit KDA’s Mobile Science Activity Center
Ballard County Elementary School fourth-graders got to spend three days of science classes inside the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Mobile Science Activity Center last week. Instructor Jason Hodge led the students through a variety of hands-on experiments and activities with BCES science teacher Crystal Herron. 
Miller receives award for essay on PE
Ballard County Elementary School fifth-grader Jake Miller (center) recently wrote an essay discussing the problems with not having a physical education program in his grade.  
BCES holds Book Fair Family Night
