Gudgell named new BMHS baseball coach
Ballard Memorial High School's baseball team will have a new head coach this spring. Cameron Gudgell said he expected to have his new players working out by mid-January.

He comes to Ballard after a two-year stint as freshman coach at F.J. Reitz High School in Evansville, Ind., where his team won the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference tournament last year. He’s also coached American Legion Post 31 (four years). Gudgell is originally from the Paducah area, and played baseball at Heath and McCracken County High schools, as well as college baseball in southern Illinois and Indiana.

“I am excited to be part of the family here, and part of this great community,” he said. “I want to set a winning culture, and get us back to where Ballard deserves to be: At the top of Region 1 baseball.”

Gudgell said that culture includes a team’s record, but also things like players being interested and giving 110 percent, doing things the right way, and always staying positive. “I am lucky to have been around great coaches in my career, like Scott Matlock at Heath and Geno Miller at McCracken,” he said. “They taught me that baseball is an essential part of life, and it teaches you lots of life lessons.”

The 22-year-old added that he will bring compassion and lots of youthful energy to the team.

Gudgell earned his bachelor’s degree in history at Oakland City (Ind.) University in 2018, and currently is pursuing his master’s in the same subject.
