Long hired as varsity baseball coach
Award-winning veteran coach Jimmy Long has been hired as Ballard Memorial’s new head baseball coach.

Long coached multiple sports at Heath High School, compiling a 193-62 record in baseball from 2002-2008. His teams won the 2nd District championship every one of those years, the 1st Region championship five times, and the All “A” Classic state championship in 2004.

He was inducted into the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 2005. Fifteen of his baseball players signed college scholarships, including five at Division 1 programs, and four went on to play in the major leagues.

At Ballard, Long said his priorities were for the team to be competitive, and for players to have fun, learn life lessons, be proud of BMHS, and to be humble.

“We’re excited to have Jimmy on board,” said Ballard Athletic Director Stephen Queen. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program.”

Long is a 1965 graduate of HHS, and played basketball at Paducah Junior College and Southeast Missouri State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree from SEMO in 1969, and his master’s from Murray State University in 1975. Long’s coaching career began with basketball at Lowes, and he served as an assistant at Heath in 1988. He was promoted to head coach in 1990, and was the longest-tenured basketball coach at HHS with 19 years. During that time, he coached over 500 games, and won multiple Class A regional and district championships. Long was named the Kentucky State High School Basketball Coaches’ Association Region 1 Coach of the Year in 2002, 2003, and 2006, and was inducted into their Court of Honor in 2010.

Long also coached boys’ and girls’ golf at HHS from 1990-2008, winning 600 matches. Notable players included Jenny Throgmorton, girls’ state champion in 1995; Nikki Orazine, state runner-up in 1998; and Rick Cochran, boys’ state runner-up in 2005.

Long and his wife, Dianna K, live in Grahamville. They have six children, and attend Bethel Christian Church.
