O'Connor hired as varsity softball coach
Bobby O’Connor has been hired as Ballard Memorial’s new head softball coach. He also will assist new Ballard County Middle School softball coach Scott Alexander this fall.

O’Connor is no stranger to Ballard sports. He was assistant BCMS football coach under LeToun Bledsoe for the 2014 team that won the divisional championship. O’Connor also was the girls’ basketball coach for three years, boys’ seventh-grade basketball coach for two years, and assistant softball coach for two years, all at BCMS. He was Ballard Rec League coordinator for softball, baseball and T-ball for three years, and currently is finishing up his seventh season as Ballard Bombshells’ summer league coach.

O’Connor is a 1996 BMHS alumnus, with an associate’s degree in human services from the University of the Cumberlands. He will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in human services form UC in December 2019.

“Coach Alexander was a great hire for the middle school job,” O’Connor said. “He brings a new energy, and excitement for the game. I was excited to see 34 middle school girls show up for BCMS softball tryouts.”

O’Connor says his top priorities are to improve roster numbers and work on weaknesses. “This year’s team will be young, but we have some experience returning, and I look forward to seeing them perform on the field. If we can gain a few players, I like our chances of competing for a District championship and an All A championship. We know we have a lot of work to do, but if we can make it to the regional tournament, anything can happen.”

The O’Connor family lives in Kevil and attend Fairview Baptist Church in LaCenter. “Pastor Hill always encourages us to stay positive and to set an example for others to follow,” the coach said. “I look to carry that same mindset to the softball field.

O’Connor said, “I would like to thank Ballard Memorial for giving me the opportunity to lead this team. I’m excited to get started! I’ve already started talking to some former players, and I am counting down the days to opening day. I am eager to put our talents on display to the community and the region.”
