New no-smoking signs signal state policy change
In the 2019 legislative session, the Kentucky General Assembly voted to make all public school property smoke-free by July 1, 2020. Following this change in state law (KRS 438.345), the Ballard County Board of Education voted earlier this year to implement the new rules on the state's 2020 date.

“The state ban will include the use of tobacco products, alternative nicotine products and vapor products,” said Superintendent Dr. Casey Allen. “It will apply on a full-time basis to everyone who visits or uses any of our property, including vehicles, and during use by youth leagues and others.”

The signs were posted in early September, and information went home in parent newsletters and other media afterward, he said.

While Ballard's buildings have been smoke-free for some time, new signs have gone up around exterior spaces on campus, including Bomber Field for football, and the baseball and softball fields.
