The traffic plan is in place for Ballard County Preschool and Head Start’s new location at Ballard County Elementary School. Preschool sessions will be Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon for morning classes and noon to 3:30 p.m. for afternoon classes. The first day of preschool at the new location will be Aug. 21, which also is the day of the total solar eclipse (more on that below).
The elementary day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. at BCES, so the later start at BCPS should help alleviate any traffic concerns, said Ballard County Director of Transportation Darrell Sullivan. The majority of BCPS students arrive by bus, he added, so on regular days there should only be 25-30 students being picked up or dropped off by car each session.
Preschool parents may begin lining up for pick-up and drop-off at the BCES east front entrance (the double doors by the tennis courts) no earlier than 15 minutes before each session – in other words, at 8:15 a.m. for the morning session, 11:45 a.m. for midday pick up/drop off, and at 3:15 p.m. for afternoon session pick up.
Pick up/drop off will not be allowed at the preschool before these times, in order for elementary students to finish loading/unloading. (For Stop N Go pickup, please see below.) Preschool parents arriving earlier than the designated times will need to park in the lot in front of the preschool end of the building until it is time to get into line. Parents are asked not to line up or park behind BCPS; the back must be kept clear for buses’ safety, Sullivan explained. Bus riders will be dropped off and picked up under the canopy at the east wing’s back entrance.
Because all K-12 students will be out on campus to view the eclipse on Aug. 21, safety is a special concern. The district will restrict access to the entire campus from 12:15 to 1 p.m. on that day. Campus will be closed from 1 to 2 p.m., to facilitate uninterrupted viewing of this once-in-a-lifetime event. The campus will be reopened at 2 p.m.
This should not interfere with midday BCPS pick up and drop off, since it is anticipated to be from 11:45 until about 12:15 p.m., Sullivan said. On Aug. 21, parents bringing students into the preschool are asked to park in the lot in front of the BCPS entrance only (between BCES drive and the Board office), especially after 11:45 a.m.
On all preschool days, students being dropped off by cars will be escorted from the curb into the building by teachers or instructional assistants at the BCPS entrance (east double front doors) at the beginning and end of each preschool session. Late arrivals to BCPS during the day (after 8:30 a.m. and noon) must go to the regular BCES entrance (central doors).
NOTE: Stop N Go daycare now is located in the back section of the preschool wing, in Room W124. Parents picking up or dropping off students before or after regular hours at daycare only may park in the back lot in front of the football stadium and bring their children in the back door Parents are asked to use the front entrance during times when buses are loading or unloading children (7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., and 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.)
