Ballard County Schools will hold its annual Veterans Day program on Nov. 10 at 1:15 p.m. at the Ballard Memorial High School gym at 3561 Paducah Road, Barlow. The public is invited to this event, and veterans in attendance will be recognized. The featured speaker will be BMHS alumnus Lt. Col. Mike Petty (U.S. Army - ret.). There will be performances by Ballard’s band and choirs, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes members will light candles in remembrance of those who died in conflict.
Petty graduated from BMHS in 1965 and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and master’s degree in education from Murray State University. He retired from DuPont in 2016 after 40 years in the ag chemistry-crop production industry.
his U.S. Army commission through the Advanced ROTC program at MSU Medical
Service Corps, and was a distinguished military graduate in 1972.
Petty served as company
commander and executive officer of the 807th Mobile Army
Surgical Hospital in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Kuwait, Iraq,
Saudi Arabia, in 1990-91. While there, the unit served in direct support of the
1st Armored Division. He received the Bronze Star, and the
Army Commendation, Kuwait Liberation, and Southwest Asia Service medals for his
service in the Gulf War.
Petty retired at the rank of lieutenant
colonel in 1998, with 25 years of active and reserve duty. He resides in
Paducah, with wife of 50 years, Paulette.
