The public is invited to
Ballard Memorial High School's annual Veterans' Day program on Friday, Nov. 9,
at 1:15 p.m. in the gym at 3561 Paducah Road. Speaker will be BMHS alumnus Dr.
Larry Purcell, and the band and choirs will perform.
Purcell graduated from BMHS in 1970 and received a scholarship to Paducah Community College. The Vietnam War was still underway and the military draft. “I answered my nation’s call to military service, and joined the Marine Corps in 1971,” Purcell said. “I had wanted to be a Marine since I was a young boy.”
He served in many roles while serving in the Marine Corps, and later in the Army as infantry, military police, and others, until 1980. In 1981, Purcell became a pastor. He has served churches in Kentucky, Florida, and North Carolina.
Purcell earned his doctorate in leadership, and has taught doctoral studies for over 20 years. “The research I have conducted and the seminars I have taught were greatly influenced by military experiences of others and myself,” he said.
Currently, he is a church consultant for the Kentucky Baptist Convention, assisting pastors and churches with issues related to leadership. Purcell also continues to teach graduate studies. He and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Dawn, (also a BMHS graduate), and two grandchildren, Abby and Chase.
