District outlines health protocols
Since the beginning of in-person classes, several parents have called with questions about whether to send students to school or keep them home. "I appreciate the many calls that we have received from parents about the health of their children, out of concern for other students and staff, and the adverse effects their health could have on the school year," said Ballard Director of Pupil Personnel Bob Wilson. "One of the best ways we can do this is by keeping your students (or yourself) home during illnesses."
According to the state’s document, "Healthy at School," the criteria for when a student or staff member should remain at home is as follows:
  • A temperature of 100.4 degrees F or greater
  • And/or a prolonged cough
  • And/or vomiting/diarrhea
  • And/or a new rash
  • And/or exposure to a COVID-19 case during the 48 hours before the onset of symptoms until the case meets the criteria for leaving home isolation.
The Purchase District Health Department, which serves Ballard County, put together a flow chart about what to do in the event a student or staff member has symptoms, or is tested for COVID-19.
According to the protocol from PDHD, students who stay home with those symptoms must meet the following criteria before they may return to school, Wilson continued.
  • Student or staff member must receive a negative COVID-19 test result, or receive a definitive alternate diagnosis from a physician stating he/she can return to school (e.g., an ear infection, strep throat), and
  • Student or staff member must have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
If the student or staff is not tested for COVID-19, or does not have a definitive alternative diagnosis from a physician, he/she must isolate following current guidance for COVID-19. (Current PDHD guidance can be found on our COVID-19 Resources page.)
If a student or staff member is unclear about the criteria for staying home, or for quarantine or end of quarantine, please contact the school nurse at 270-665-8400, or the PDHD at 270-665-5432.
