Miller chosen for Governor's Scholars Program
Ballard Memorial High School junior Jake Miller is the latest in a long line in his family to be selected for the Governor’s Scholars Program. His father, aunt, and three cousins also were GSP participants. This year, over 2,000 applications were submitted, from which approximately 1,000 students will attend on one of three Kentucky college campuses.
Miller, the son of John and Kelley Miller of LaCenter, said he wouldn’t know until late May when his session would be held, or where. The summer residential program for outstanding rising seniors will be held for five weeks beginning in mid-June at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Centre College in Danville, and Eastern Kentucky in Morehead.
He said he’d requested focus sessions in health care, engineering, and psychology. Miller said he’s still deciding on a college major, but probably would like to study physical therapy or orthopedic medicine at Vanderbilt University. GSP alumni are offered up to full-tuition scholarships at most Kentucky universities and colleges, and many out-of-state institutions.
Miller is president-elect of Student Council, and active in 4-H, FBLA, Academic Team, and French and Beta clubs. He’s also a three-sport athlete, playing on the tennis, golf, and basketball teams. “I usually do a lot more,” he said, “but this year has been kinda weird.” He and his family also are active members at First Baptist Church in Barlow, where Miller said he’s in the youth group, and “everything on the schedule.”
