Ballard County now is partnered with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. “We’ve been working on this for a while, but only became operational recently,” said Ballard Family Focus Director Kelly Wray. “Parents can sign their kids up online, or they can call me and register them over the phone.”

With tonight’s weather forecast, administrators at Ballard County Schools again are discussing plans for bad weather. As soon as a decision to close or delay school is made, the district has several pathways for letting parents and the public know, Superintendent Casey Allen said. Banners are placed on the district’s webpage at www.ballard.kyschools.us as soon as possible, and the closing is posted on the district Facebook page. BCS also uses an automated messaging service, through its Infinite Campus student data service, that allows it to contact all families within minutes.

Ballard County Preschool-Head Start will hold spring registration for new students on March 30 and 31 for children who are or will be 3 or 4 years old by Aug. 1, 2023. All registrations are by appointment only, and will be held at BCPS, 3383 Paducah Road, Barlow. Parents/Guardians are asked to please call BCPS at 270-665-8400, ext. 2100, to schedule an appointment. Children must be present to complete developmental screenings (language, cognitive and motor skills) while adults complete the registration packet.

UPDATED GIRLS' GAME TIME: The Ballard-CCA game has been moved to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Ballard girls will host Community Christian Academy on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Green Palace. Winner will play Christian Fellowship School on Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at CFS. Ballard boys will host Hickman County on Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Winner will play the winner of the Fulton County/Fulton City-Mayfield game on Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Mayfield. Semifinal and final games are at Mayfield High School.

The 2021 Lady Bomber volleyball team will be recognized between games of a varsity double-header on Friday, Jan. 6. That team won the All “A” Region 1 tournament, and advanced to the state All “A” final four. A banner highlighting those accomplishments will be hung in the Green Palace.

The results to the COVID pandemic response have challenged educators in many ways – how to correct learning loss, improve attendance, get students back in the habit of good behavior. Not surprisingly, the latter two items have a substantial impact on the first. Enter Christy Webster and the local boutique, The Giving Tree. She contacted Ballard County Middle School Principal Amber Parker, to ask how she could help out this semester, to the tune of $100 per week. Along with TGT’s Grace Travis, they devised a plan.

Family Focus and Teen Focus have begun their annual Christmas food drive; it will continue until the last day of classes on Dec. 16. The Wickliffe Masonic Lodge also works on this project, purchasing groceries to go along with the food that is collected. Each grade has a suggested food item so that there will be a good variety. Students and staff members are encouraged to donate. Food may sent to school with your student.

Ballard Memorial High School will host the Quad State Shoot-out on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Green Palace. There will be teams from Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee playing, along with BMHS girls and boys, starting at 1 p.m. There will be a special recognition at halftime 7 p.m. game to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1992 District Champion boys’ basketball team.
