BCPS to expand classroom, day care services with grant

Ballard County Preschool-Head Start has been awarded a Preschool Partnership Grant through the Division of Child Care for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, for $150,000 per year. Terri Gentry, preschool and special education director for the district, said the grant would allow the school to expand services to four full-day preschool classrooms, for 20 additional full-day students, and one AM/PM session classroom.

Kim Morris, new District 1 board member
BOE appoints Morris to serve as District 1 representative

The Ballard County Board of Education voted at a special called meeting on June 8 to appoint Kim Morris to the District 1 seat. The position became vacant on May 31, when the resignation of long-time board member Karen Hensley became official. Morris’ term will expire on Dec. 31, 2022. An election to fill the seat will be held in November 2022, for which Morris has filed to run. The election winner’s term will begin on Jan. 1, 2023.

New food service director Sara Jane Hedges
Hedges named food service director at BCS

Sara Jane Hedges has been named food service director at Ballard County Schools. She will assume her duties on July 1 from exiting director Amber Hayes, who will continue in a reduced role to oversee a major renovation of the middle and high school cafeteria, and the state food service audit. “My husband and I are both from small towns, and we’re very excited to be part of a small community,” Hedges said. They are hoping to relocate to Ballard County, and maybe find a spot where they can raise St. Bernard dogs.

New district student information specialist Valarie Helm
Helm named student information specialist at BCS

Valerie Helm has been named student information specialist at Ballard County Schools. She will assume her duties on July 1. Helm will take over for the retiring Jennifer Robinson, who will be leaving on July 31. The two ladies had worked together in McCracken County before Robinson came to Ballard, and Helm succeeded her there. “Jennifer had told me so much about the community, and always talked about what a great work environment it is here,” Helm said. “I am looking forward to being part of the ‘Bomber family’ and the community!”

Ballard County Schools is seeking two community representatives to serve on its Local Planning Committee, beginning now and continuing in 2023. The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. on Friday, June 10.

Graduation 2022
BMHS graduates 73 members of the Class of 2022

Ballard Memorial High School observed its 70th commencement exercises on May 13. The Class of 2022 ended with 73 graduates. The valedictorians were Carson Buchanan, Wendy Burnley, Dustin Howle, and Jacob Miller. Salutatorian was Abby Boulton. There were two additional honor graduates: David Ezekiel Meinschein and Colton Sullenger. Photos of the honor graduates, and full lists of Scholarship and Awards days are attached at the bottom of the story.

Amanda Perry has been named school psychologist for Ballard County Schools. She will assume her new duties on July 1. Perry is a 2004 Ballard Memorial High School graduate.

BMHS senior Cole Owens selected for Governor's Scholars Program

Ballard Memorial High School junior Cole Owens has been selected to participate in the prestigious Governor’s Scholars Program. This year, over 2,000 applications were submitted, from which approximately 1,000 students will attend on one of three Kentucky college campuses.

Summer school credit recovery set at BMHS

Summer school credit recovery sessions for students at Ballard Memorial High School who failed an English or math class will begin Tuesday, May 31, and tentatively will end on Thursday, June 23. Summer school will run from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday the first week, and Monday-Thursday the following three weeks. Breakfast/lunch will be provided, as well as bus transportation (if needed).
