Dr. Casey Allen named KAPT Superintendent of the Year for support of student transportation

Dr. Casey Allen was named the Kentucky Association of Pupil Transportation’s Superintendent of the Year at the group’s annual meeting on June 24.

He was nominated by Ballard Director of Transportation Leigh Ann Green for his outstanding support of the district’s drivers and transportation program.

“We knew last summer that our department was going to be in dire straits this year, after losing a third of our drivers,” Green said. “Dr. Allen went to the board and talked to them about the difficulty in recruiting and retaining drivers. He and the board came up with an incentive program that included raises for all drivers and monitors, as well as rewards for recruiting successful CDL candidates and other measures. We appreciate the commitment from our board and admin team.”

Dr. Allen said, “I am humbled by the nomination made by our transportation staff, and so incredibly grateful that KAPT chose to recognize me. Our transportation department is an awesome asset to our district and community and deserves recognition much more than I do. 

“Our bus drivers and monitors are often the first people our children see each morning and the last people they see each afternoon,” he continued. “They manage behaviors and drive at the same time, and all the while focusing first and foremost on student safety. I appreciate the recognition, but I appreciate all the people who work in the transportation department more!”

Dr. Allen has been superintendent of Ballard County Schools for 14 years, and previously served as supervisor of instruction and middle school principal. This year, he added bus driver to his resume, as the first administrator to obtain his CDL. 

“Now almost all of our coaches have their licenses, as well as several other administrators, and a couple of community members,” Green added. “We still need drivers and monitors for the upcoming year, so please contact me if you or someone you know might be interested.
